about

Fiddle Tunes Arranged For Surf-Style Electric Mandolin....
Dedicated to the memory of Bradley Pinkerton...

-------------------------------------

Well, it started out about 5 years ago when The Sandfleas headed up to play at the infamous Surf and Turf festival at the Rodeo grounds in beautiful Darrington, Washington...

Cowabunga!!

We got there about one in the morning, planning to camp that night to get a good night's sleep for our onstage gig at 2 the next afternoon...
Well, all over the campground, all you could hear was banjos and mandolins, and folks sorta singing in harmony...

Some guy was even blowing off explosives...

The weirdest Surf Music Festival I've ever seen or heard....
It wasn't till the next morning that we realized we got our dates wrong, and we were at The Darrington Bluegrass Festival...
Hmmm...

I've never heard fiddle tunes before, but it sure sounded like surf music to me without the Fender tank reverb--two A parts, a B part, then another A...
The tremelo on the mandolin sure sounded like Dick Dale to me...
Piece of cake...

Before long the whole band was out borrowing instruments, and we wound up hanging out with this local moonshiner sampling the wares, and playing surf tunes on acoustic instruments...

We were groms when it came to playing that bluegrass stuff, but learned a bunch of new tunes, and here they are in all their glory...

Hope you enjoy "Overhead at Darrington"...
